Federal Holidays in America 2018

Approximately 62% of the total U.S. population is employed in private sector employment. This means over half of the population rely on private sector employees for holiday. However, most employers follow a holiday schedule very much similar to federal holidays of America 2018. So today, we are going to focus on Federal Holidays as well as State holidays in America 2017.


List of Federal Holidays in America 2018;


New Years 2018 (1st Jan-2nd Jan) Federal Holiday

List of State Holidays in America 2018

Lee–Jackson Day (12th January) – State Holiday

Lee–Jackson Day is a holiday celebrated in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the U.S., for the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. The original holiday, created in 1889, celebrated Lee’s birthday. Jackson’s name was added to the holiday in 1904.(source Wikipedia)


Robert E Lee’s Birthday (15th January) State Holiday

This is yet another holiday named after a person Because Lee was General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States, it is mainly observed in the U.S. South, particularly Alabama and Mississippi.


Civil Rights Day (15th January) State Holiday

It honours civil rights activists and is combined with Martin Luther King Day. It is observed every 3rd Monday of January, and in Arizona, New Hampshire.


Idaho Human Rights Day (3rd Monday of January; 15th January) State Holiday

It is stated holiday only observed in the U.S. State of Idaho. The holiday is celebrated simultaneously each year on the same day as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The full name of this holiday in the state of Idaho is Martin Luther King, Jr. – Idaho Human Rights Day.


Emancipation Day (16th April) State Holiday

It is observed in Washington DC only. A wide range of events is arranged in Washington D.C to mark Emancipation Day. These are spread throughout the month. The events aim to educate a broad spectrum of people about the history of the municipality of the District of Columbia in general and slavery in particular.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (15th January) – Federal Holiday

Martin Luther King Jr. is an American federal Holiday marking the birthday of King Jr. Martin Luther observed 3rd Monday of January every year.

Several events are held every year and are scheduled for the coming year 2018. Here are few of those events taking place.

MLK Day for Kids –                          Children’s Museum of Atlanta has special events for kids on this day.

MLK Day commemoration-          Ebenezer Baptist Church, featuring a gospel artist and keynote speaker.

MLK run/walk-                                  Drummer lines for 5k Drum run preceded by music and dancing and followed by a party at Piedmont Park.

MLK museum day-                          Admission is free at the Atlanta History Center and the Margaret Mitchell House (where Gone with the Wind was written) in honour of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.             Source: Events12.com


President’s Day (19th February) Federal Holiday

President’s Day remarks the birthday of first President of United States (George Washington’s Birthday). It is also combined with Lincoln’s Birthday Although his birthday was on 12th February.


Mother’s Day (13th May) Federal Holiday

Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, usually in the month of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honouring the family members such as Father’s Day, Sibling’s Day, and Parent’s Day and so on. There are events where children perform for their mother, for thanking their mother for what they have been given.


Memorial Day (28th May) Federal Holiday

Father’s Day (17th June)

Father’s Day is a holiday celebrated honouring the father. It is not as much as popular as Mother’s Day as it was started much later than the former. Independence Day (4th of July) Federal Holiday

The most recent holiday while this article was written. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbeques, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of America. Labour Day (3rd September) Federal Holiday

Celebrated on the first Monday of September, labour day honours the American Labour Movement. Although more than 80 countries celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1, Canada also celebrates Labour day on the first Monday of September. Different events are held on this day, people celebrate from fireworks to festivals throughout the country.


Columbus Day (8th October) Federal Holiday

Columbus Day became a federal holiday in America in 1937, though people have celebrated Columbus’s voyage since the colonial period. It is observed honouring Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Americans in 1492. It is not only celebrated in America but also in Italy, Spain, and various other countries. Events are organised in different states of America. Such as Boston Columbus Weekend Events, events in NYC including the Columbus Day Parade.


Veterans Day(11th November) Federal Holiday

It is celebrated honouring the military veterans, who served in America Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day.

Thanksgiving Day (22nd November) Federal Holiday

Thanksgiving day, as its name suggests, is the day for people to thank for what they have. It is a part of the broader holiday season where a family can pack up and go for a 4-day weekend trip. Thanksgiving period is one the busiest period for the travel in America.

Next Day Thanksgiving (23rd November) Federal Holiday

The day after Thanksgiving is a state holiday Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, West Virginia. This day is also known as Family Day in Nevada. Black Friday is the same day where you can buy kinds of stuff you like in bulk discount.

Christmas Day (25th December) Federal Holiday

Christmas Day is celebrated as the day of birth of Jesus Christ.

Children, in particular, receive a lot of gifts from their parents and other relatives in the form of the mythical figure Santa Claus. This has led to Christmas Day becoming an increasingly commercialised holiday. Turkey is the main meal of this day. It is one of the biggest festivals of the year. Public closes down completely on this day. It is celebrated by giving gifts, get together with family and other social gatherings, symbolic decoration, feasting etc
